Job Description

Manages the Laboratory’s portfolio of university and college programs that includes the suite of undergraduate and graduate student internship programs; university student summer schools and boot-camps; visiting faculty programs; and university partnerships. Aligns programming to laboratory initiatives and the larger talent and outreach strategy, which includes the implementation of current programming and the development of new programming that address gaps identified through strategic planning.

Leads a team of individuals and manages all aspects of student, faculty and university programming including: overseeing and maintaining the technology to support all business processes (student hiring, faculty onboarding, joint appointments); building marketing plans and recruitment programs to ensure participation from a diverse population; managing participant onboarding and termination processes; managing all student intern challenges and personal needs during off hours; and developing an evaluation plan and tracking key metrics.

Develops and implements programming for students, faculty, and university and college institutional partners. Additional programming may include:

  • a formal Mentor Program across all university student and partnership programs that supports the development of student mentors, faculty supervisors, and joint appointee collaborators in creating successful research partnerships and learning experiences. This includes overseeing the development of program materials and recognition processes that showcase exceptional best practices around partnership development.

  • A Student Ambassador’s Program, which focuses on developing long-term connections with students outside of their appointment both online and at conferences and workshops. 

  • A University Partnership Program that includes building strategic collaborative research connections with universities and colleges by nurturing connections with Lab initiatives, centers, divisions, user facilities and talent programs. Specifically, launch a Faculty Incubator Program, that supports scientific leadership development within early career faculty at non-R1 institutions as they grown their research capacity.

  • Develops and implements an evaluation plan within each program and across the program portfolio, and tracks metrics that demonstrates program impact and informs future program development.

Collaborates with Argonne scientific divisions and operational leaders to ensure programs are implemented with simplicity, efficiency, and transparency.

Supports the Institutional Partnership Director’s efforts in building and nurturing relationships with key universities, colleges and other S&T consortiums and higher education associations, by hosting convening opportunities aligned to strategic scientific initiatives and funding opportunities. Serves as program manager and liaison for a number of DOE program offices; and collaborates across the DOE complex through membership on the National Laboratory Education Director’s University Partnerships Subcommittee.

Manages an annual budget of $2M+ across student and faculty programs. Contributes to Laboratory wide planning and reports; and provides quarterly and end-of-year snapshots that showcase spending and program impacts. Supports large and small grant writing efforts for both STEM education and scientific collaborative efforts.

Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience of leading a high-functioning team in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with university and college partners.

  • Experience in program development for university-focused audiences, including knowledge of recruiting strategies for high volume programs within diverse communities, program implementation and assessment, and management of participant issues.

  • Extensive experience working with a university student population and developing learning experiences that align to developing students’ knowledge, skills, and identity.

  • Experience in building collaborations within and across institutions, including supporting collaborative research teams and leading faculty development programming.

  • Demonstrated success managing and directing a team of professional staff including; evaluating employee performance; setting individual expectations and goals; creating an inclusive environment that promotes diversity; and focusing on professional development and teamwork.

  • Knowledge of best practices in adult learning is also preferred.

  • Ability to leverage technology and social media to increase efficiency and effectiveness in collaboration, communication, and engagement across multiple audiences.

  • Experience in Microsoft Office, cloud-based collaboration tools, online application tools, web platforms, and social media is desired.

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders needs and come to a collective solution for the good of the laboratory or program.

  • Interpersonal, negotiation, and customer skills as well as the ability to establish a rapport with others.

  • Ability to collaborate across all levels of an organization and drive change effectively.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to details; highly responsive.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment and manage multiple deadlines.
