The Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a Technical Director for Theatre and Dance beginning July 1, 2023.

The Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance is growing and changing. We offer eight diverse curricular options that develop and nurture each student’s creativity, curiosity, and collaborative skills. We inspire our students to be thinkers, responsible citizens, and motivated artists who will make a difference in creating the next generation’s voice. We are seeking collegial, collaborative faculty with excellent communication and organizational skills to join us. The department is aBFA/BA/BS undergraduate-only program with over 350 theatre majors, 65 dance majors and 45 full-time faculty/staff. The Department plays an active role in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) and with the American College Dance Association (ACDA). Ball State is accredited by both the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). Our undergraduate only program, low student-to-faculty ratio, hands-on advising and mentoring from a faculty of working professionals, and distinguished guest artists.

Position Function: The Technical Director will execute all drafting and creation of scenic elements, manage and maintain all budgetary aspects related to the production season, supervise and mentor a staff scenic supervisor and over twenty student employees, teach one course per semester from courses such as stagecraft (THE 220), advanced stagecraft (THEA 320), and computer aided drafting (THEA 225) among others, serve on the Department’s Production Committee which selects the shows to be mounted the following year, and serve as a technical liaison to the new Performing Arts Center hoping to break ground in the fall of 2023. Additionally, this position also may serve as a designer in whatever area of expertise they have within the areas of design/tech when applicable.
Minimum Education: Master’s degree in theatre or related discipline completed by date of employment or equivalent professional experience.
Minimum Experience:
• One year of technical direction or related experience.
• Experience with computer aided drafting programs (preferably Vector Works).
• Experience or understanding with theatrical rigging systems.
• Experience with managing and maintaining budgets.
Minimum Other:
• Excellent verbal communication skills.
• Highly organized and effective problem solver.
• Experience as a welder.
• Able to balance the teaching and production needs of an active undergraduate program.
• Ability to work collegially within a liberal arts setting.
Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Education: M.F.A. in Technical Direction or Scenic Design.
Preferred Experience:
• Three years of technical direction or related experience.
• Teaching experience at the university/college level.
• Experience and expertise within the area of welding.
• Technical experience with professional theatre and/or dance companies.
• Ability to serve as a designer within the production season when needed.

Salary and benefit packages for this position are competitive, with salaries for this opportunity beginning at $50,000 annually.
