Job Overview

The Free Speech Project at Georgetown University assesses the condition of Free Speech in America in education, civil society, and government at all levels. The Program Manager and Editor produces, implements, and monitors project-related events, activities, and key administrative tasks, and will edit, write, and prepare its articles and written materials to be published on the project website. This position will work closely and collaboratively with the National Outreach and Marketing Coordinator to develop marketing and promotional vehicles, and the Part-time Editor and undergraduate research assistants to generate and design written vehicles.

The Program Manager and Editor will report to and work collaboratively with the Director regarding managerial and operating goals, objectives, protocols, and publications, ensuring the project’s continued growth and success, as well as Georgetown University’s forward-thinking ideals and mission of social justice and integrity. With respect to project implementation and operational matters, the Program Manager and Editor will serve as a representative of the project to both internal and external constituencies.

Additionally, the Program Manager and Editor will assist with administering and managing the project’s budget, and apply general professional-level knowledge and independent judgment to determine the best course of action in solving problems and assessing routine and non-routine factors.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The Program Manager and Editor will work both independently and as part of the Free Speech Project team to accomplish its mission and directives. This position supports, communicates, and understands the initiatives of the project, as well as its curriculum, requirements, and deliverables.

The Program Manager and Editor will work cooperatively with relevant University departments and/or the community to accomplish effectively the endeavors of the Free Speech Project. This position collaborates with team members to identify project resources and informational needs, as well as provide excellent verbal and written communication and feedback as required. This position communicates with full-time and part-time staff, as well as undergraduate research assistants, regarding all relevant responsibilities.

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
Ability to determine informational needs, collect and analyze information, and devise and develop statistical analyses and reports.

Responsibilities

Work with the Director and National Outreach and Marketing Coordinator to schedule, coordinate, and plan regional Free Speech symposia that will have large in-person audiences, as well as all other project-related events and forums.

Ensure monthly public forums are executed in a timely manner with high-profile guests and excellent attendance.

Work across cultures and political opinions to enhance the quality of events and ensure they align with the non-partisan mission of the project.

Work closely with the National Outreach and Marketing Coordinator to market and advertise the Free Speech Project creatively to a diverse and widespread audience, expanding its reach and presence in other respects, such as increased user web traffic and subscription growth.

Oversee and provide editorial guidance to 15+ undergraduate research assistants and an undergraduate Copy Editor.

Work closely with the Part-time Editor to ensure fact-based and quality reporting of various First Amendment news stories.

Manage key daily tasks to ensure the success of the Free Speech Project.

File expense reports.

Manage the project’s budget.

Screen and onboard full-time and part-time applicants.

Screen and onboard applicants for the undergraduate research team.

Ensure timely payment to project staff.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required.

Must be comfortable working with various speakers and colleagues in different locations.

Must possess a strong work ethic.

Experience in a higher education setting.

Ability to examine and evaluate operations and develop and/or re-engineer operating strategies, systems, and

procedures.

Help develop and implement funding strategies and programs.

Demonstrated professional knowledge and operational expertise.

Strong program planning, development, implementation, and leadership skills.

Ability to design, develop and deliver both oral and written presentations.

Ability to use independent judgment and manage and impart information in an accurate, concise, and

professional manner.

Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.

Represent the Free Speech Project and the University in a positive and productive manner at all times.
