Job Description

The Markowitz lab is seeking a Research Associate I whose skills and personal and professional experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

The lab's research interest is in studying immune suppressor cells, their role in the development of melanoma, and means of inhibiting their actions.  We are also developing tools to predict which patients are likely to fail immune-based therapy via novel high dimensional flow cytometric, mass spectrometry and informatics techniques, allowing those patients to be treated with other potentially more effective therapies.  We are a translational laboratory striving to translate the knowledge gained in the laboratory via immune-based and traditional biochemical approaches to the clinic.    https://moffitt.org/providers/joseph-markowitz/

Position Highlights:

  • The Research Associate will directly report to Dr. Markowitz of the Cutaneous Oncology and Immunology programs.
  • The Markowitz lab research interest is in studying immune suppressor cells, their role in the development of melanoma, and means of inhibiting their actions. 
  • We are also developing tools to predict which patients are likely to fail immune-based therapy via novel high dimensional flow cytometric, mass spectrometry and informatics techniques, allowing those patients to be treated with other potentially more effective therapies. 
  • We are a translational laboratory striving to translate the knowledge gained in the laboratory via immune-based and traditional biochemical approaches to the clinic. 

Ideal Candidate:

  • Specific skillsets required for this position are: proficiency in general laboratory techniques, cell culture techniques, general proficiency in computers, immunoblotting (Western Blot), flow cytometry, mouse handling and colony maintenance, 96 well microplate-based assays such as proliferation assays or immunohistochemistry.  Not all skillsets are required and level of position will be based on prior experience.   

Responsibilities:

  • Performs basic, biological, or public health research within the specified research program. 
  • Conduct general laboratory techniques such as immunoblot flow cytometry, mouse experiments, cell culture, 96 well microplate assays such as proliferation assays under general supervision of the laboratory. 
  • Assist other members of the laboratory
  • Administrative duties: maintain lab supply inventory, order lab supplies

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field is required
  • Hands-on research experience is required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and coordinate experiments with other members of the team.
  • Ability to organize and present data clearly and concisely.
