Job Description

Position Highlights:

With oversight from the Language Services Manager, and in collaboration with the Language Services Coordinator, the Interpreter Supervisor provides basic and tactical day-to day supervision of the Medical Interpreters and Sr. Interpreters' daily operations to achieve appropriate language access to our patients, to achieve department productivity, and to maintain and enhance patient satisfaction.

 

The Interpreter Supervisor performs the following tasks:

- Competent interpreter services as needed

- Understands the anticipated patient volumes and schedules the appropriate staffing levels

- Communicates with internal clients to understand upcoming interpreting needs

- Supports team through staff development and performance goals and competencies.

-Provides day-to-day guidance on meeting client needs.

- Maintains open communication with Manager, Language Services

- Reinforces a spirit of teamwork, accountability, and excellence among the team of interpreters.

 

Responsibilities:

Interpreting

  • Facilitates communication in his or her conduit role during informed consent sessions, outpatient and inpatient visits, genetics counseling appointments, pre-op, pre anesthesia sessions, Physical Therapy, discharge sessions, patient teaching, etc. from one spoken language into another.
  • Applies the tenants of confidentiality, accuracy, impartiality and professional boundaries in all their interactions within the triadic encounter.
  • Interprets all utterances during the session, does not omit, add, or change the meaning of the message.
  • Documents in PowerChart tasks as they are generated in Cerner upon patient's admission and documents the sessions between providers and patient are on the patient's chart via the Language Services Interpreting documentation Powerform.
  • Keeps accurate records of the services provided on the department's application. This task consists of recording the start and end times of the session, closing the encounters on ISO as close to real time as possible, and records the status of the encounter (closed, declined, missed).

 

Operational

  • Coordinates interpreters' schedules and shift deviations to ensure appropriate coverage of patient volumes.
  • Reviews PTO requests from the interpreters and approves them or denies them based on business need, monitors PTO accruals, and other institutional or departmental guidelines.
  • Reviews, in coordination with the Coordinator of Language Services, weekly patient schedules to make staffing decisions and/or to request agency interpreters.
  • Provides interpreter performance feedback and complete performance appraisals in coordination with the Language Services Manager.
  • Uses sound judgment in communications with internal clients and escalates non-routine issues related to patients, customers, and team members to the Language Services Manager.
  • Schedules team meetings.
  • Assists in other delegated tasks by the Language Services Manager.

 

Staff development and supervision in coordination with the Manager, Language Services

  • Communicates performance expectations and requirements to the interpreter team.
  • enforces policies and procedures;
  • provides interpreter performance feedback and completes performance appraisals
  • assists the Language Services Manager in the recruitment of staff
  • assists the interpreter team in the on-boarding of new interpreters; completes medical interpreters' competencies every year in coordination with Senior Interpreter;
  • Assists in other delegated tasks by the Language Services Manager.

 

Credentials and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Languages, Arts, Translation Studies, Interpretation Studies, Health Management, or other related fields.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of demonstrable medical interpreting experience in a hospital setting. Of those six years, at least two (2) years are specific to oncology. PLUS one (1) year experience in a Project Lead, Supervisory and/or Managerial role is required (may be inclusive of overall experience).
  • CMI, CHI or other state certifications might be accepted on an individual basis and taking into consideration the rest of theeducational and/or training accomplished by the candidate.
