Summary

There is currently a Intern/Aide Research opportunity in the Pedicatrics department at Baylor College of Medicine.

Job Purpose

Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.

Job Duties

  • Shadowing and Collaborative Work: The intern will shadow senior computational biologists and participate in daily lab activities, providing them with exposure to real-world research scenarios.
  • Data Collection, Curation, and Pre-processing: Interns will assist in collecting and curating biological datasets from public databases and partner sources. They will engage in the pre-processing of these datasets to ensure they are ready for analysis.
  • Preliminary Coding and Analysis: Under supervision, the intern will run algorithms, perform statistical tests on biological data and write preliminary code which are essential skills for any computational biologist.
  • Understanding the Big Picture in Human Disease Research. This includes learning about genetic variants, biomarkers, and how computational tools can aid in developing therapeutic strategies. They will also engage in discussions about the implications of their findings for disease understanding and treatment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in high school or be a high school graduate (or equivalent secondary education) or enrolled in an institution of higher education.
