The Ball State University Libraries is looking for a talented librarian to join our committed and highly-engaged team of professionals as Electronic Resources and Collection Development Librarian. Joining colleagues in the Collections and Resource Acquisition Services unit, this position plays a vital role in developing, managing, and sustaining University Libraries’ electronic and physical resource collections to support student success and faculty teaching and research. Ball State University Libraries employs 47 professionals and 63 staff employees. With access to over one million print volumes and more than 1.3 million e-resources, the Libraries provides access to a full spectrum of scholarly resources and also offers vibrant and inclusive learning space for over 650,000 annual visitors.

Job Function:

Perform activities related to developing and sustaining University Libraries' electronic and physical resource collections to meet user needs, including material selection, deselection, preservation, evaluation and assessment; coordinate pre-order activities for new e-resource acquisition, including trials and licensing; serve as collection development liaison for assigned academic departments; support an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative work environment and service culture to advance the strategic directions of the University Libraries.

Minimum Education:

MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program.

Preferred Education:

Additional advanced degrees.

Minimum Experience:

Experience(including coursework/internships) with electronic resources, collections development and management, library acquisitions, or other related area

Preferred Experience:

Electronic resources, collections development, or acquisitions experience in an academic library; experience with library automated systems, such as OCLC, GOBI, ALMA; demonstrated analytical abilities including use of qualitative/quantitative data analysis and proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with project development and management.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and select new materials in best format for assigned subject areas through approval plans, reviews, publishers' catalogs, and bibliographies, evidence-based and user demand-driven data, and library policies and procedures, and serve as collection development liaison for assigned academic departments.
  • Review existing collections and resources in assigned subjects for purposes of deselection, preservation/conservation and assessment of their continued relevance to support university curricular and research needs.
  • Prepare written reports and compile statistics as required.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of collections development and resource management policies, procedures, and workflows.
  • Actively participate in and positively contribute to the activities of the Libraries, university, and profession through such opportunities as related professional organizations, presentations, committee service, publication, etc.; keep abreast of professional literature and scholarly developments in areas of specialization and pursue opportunities for relevant professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate new e-resource acquisitions through evaluation (including trials), selection, and price and license negotiations with suppliers.
  • Communicate with faculty, library personnel, and vendor representatives to provide optimal access to new and existing electronic resources; participate in resolving access, compliance, and other issues associated with electronic resources.
