ME262: Art of Teaching Music (ATM) II 4 Credits
Through course assignments, discussion, and clinical practice in varied school music education settings, course participants learn how to create meaningful music experiences that foster individual success, accountability, a sense of community, critical thinking, independence, and life-long engagement with music. Prerequisite(s): Minimum grade of C- in ME161, and must work toward obtaining NJ substitute teaching credentials.
- Partner with a professor to supervise Music Education students fulfilling their clinical observation assignments.
- Analyze and critique immediately after each observation, identifying specific strengths and refinements, utilizing professional oral and written expression.
- Be knowledgeable about the assessment instrument and accurate evaluation procedures, allowing ample time for observation and assessment.
- Establish and maintain a professional working relationship with the cooperating school and/or district.
- Serve as a resource for the Music Education Faculty member and maintain weekly communication throughout the semester.
- Maintain effective communication with the Music Education Faculty, and Student Teacher Placement Office.
- Encourage responsibility and creativity in the student teaching experience.
- Keep adequate records on the students.
Position Requirements
- 5+ years of demonstrated successful music teaching experience in a public school or private school setting.
- BM Music Education; MM Music Education or Master of Music or similar
- Choral emphasis for Middle and High School
- General Music Emphasis for Elementary and Middle
