What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you have real passion for communications and want to join an outstanding team? If so, you could be the highly motivated, upbeat, and professional Corporate Communications Specialist we are seeking! Organization 00154, Media and Emergency Communications, is currently seeking an innovative and strategic Corporate Communications Specialist to grow the hard-working, creative team responsible for the @SandiaLabs handles across multiple social media platforms.

The selected candidate will be responsible for increasing Sandia's social audiences and supporting business goals with effective and strategic social campaigns. One will act as a brand custodian and social champion, collaborating cross-functionally with diverse teams across the Labs, including technical, media relations, and creative teams.

Successful candidates will have a strong interest in and knowledge of communication principles and standards, have experience in news and science writing/editing and writing for the web, and can synthesize complex scientific and technical subjects into compelling communications for diverse audiences.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Analyze the impact of each social channel with an understanding of social media trends and metrics to expand the reach and relevance of Sandia on its social channels
  • Cultivate strategic relationships and collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams to develop best-in-class social media strategies that deliver on Sandia’s unique tone of voice and positioning
  • Maintain a posting schedule; create and curate platform-specific content including original text posts, video, graphics, and multi-channel campaigns
  • Work closely with Sandia’s media relations staff to plan, craft, and evaluate communications that convey the mission, programs, and initiatives of the labs
  • Grow and engage with audiences on social media platforms (e.g., Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube)
  • Monitor brand mentions and sentiment
  • Guide initiatives such as college outreach and brand ambassador programs
  • Serve as an internal expert on key social trends, reacting and building on strategies as the channels and platforms evolve
  • Advocate within the Labs about your vision, Sandia’s social media strategy, and the opportunities of social media as a communications vehicle
  • Provide thought leadership by co-developing social media standards and practices, assessing future social media technology and storytelling methods
  • Compile, review, and report on engagement metrics

The selected candidate will be required to complete training to gain certification as an emergency public information officer, which will entail shared on-call responsibilities, responding to emergencies, and participation in emergency drills and exercises.

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range:

$60,300 - $135,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, English, Humanities, Technical Writing, Business, Science, Engineering, or Computing-related fields; or equivalent experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
  • 3 years’ related experience or writing for a broad, public audience
  • The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance

Writing samples and a writing test may be requested for candidates selected for interviews.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A Master’s degree in a Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, English, Humanities, Technical Writing, Business, Science, Engineering, or Computing-related fields
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills; a proven track record to initiate and complete work independently and in collaboration with multiple levels of management including top executives, and staff
  • Social media monitoring and open-source information gathering/analysis experience; experience with video editing and production, particularly for social media audiences
  • Proficiency with gathering, interpreting, and reporting on metrics for web and social media presences
  • Proven experience with digital media including podcasts, video streaming and webcasting, and integrating those tactics into a broader critical communications plan
  • Experience with rapid, daily content production, preferably in a news environment
  • An excellent command of English grammar and spelling
  • Excellent organizational and recordkeeping abilities
  • Cross-disciplinary skills in developing communication products
  • A strong understanding of social media key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics-driven approaches to proving the value of social media activity
  • A portfolio that provides written evidence of professional-level communications experience and abilities
  • Knowledge of Sandia’s programs, missions, and technical accomplishments

About Our Team:

Sandia’s Media and Emergency Communications team works to protect and enhance the Labs’ reputation through outreach to the public, partners, and customers via award-winning mass and social media campaigns. Our team members serve as official Labs spokespersons, which includes interacting with or hosting visiting news media representatives from throughout the world, and as on-call emergency public information officers. We develop daily news releases with high-quality images and video, Lab News stories, media advisories, engaging web and social media content, and other external communications products.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
