What Your Job Will Be Like:
Sandia’s Space Mission Engineering Program Office (SMEPO) is seeking an experienced remote sensing and space domain awareness (SDA), also known as space situational awareness (SSA), expert to lead and support projects to advance national security in space. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of remote sensing and space domain awareness capabilities and programs, familiarity with SDA modeling tools, and a history of SDA community engagement.
Join our dynamic, multidisciplinary team providing science and engineering solutions to meet vital needs in the growing fields of space domain awareness and space control. This position provides opportunity to have real impact on national security through the development and delivery of critical space-relevant missions.
On any given day you may do the following:
- Conduct modeling and simulation of remote sensing and space domain awareness sensors, systems, and constellations to inform government strategy and acquisitions.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in project execution.
- Deliver results on time and within budget.
- Build relationships with DOD and/or IC SDA stakeholders.
- Synthesize disparate and incomplete technical data into meaningful information.
- Represent Sandia within the SDA community.
- Network across the Center, Division, and Lab to leverage a broad range of expertise.
- Develop creative solutions to challenging and partially understood problems.
- Generate good-enough results to quick-response customer needs.
- Work with other senior staff and managers to inform SMEPO strategy.
- Work with other senior staff and managers to develop new business with existing and new customers.
- Champion innovation within the department, encouraging the identification of gaps and opportunities for advancing SDA related projects.
- Mentor junior staff.
- Work independently with little oversight.
Salary Range:
$109,300 - $217,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience defined by the following parameters:
- Associate’s degree plus nine (9) years of relevant work experience; or
- A High School Diploma plus thirteen (13) years of relevant work experience.*
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance with an SCI.
*Sandia National Laboratories defines relevant work experience for this role as engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.
- Experience working with National Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
- Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Active SCI clearance.
- Subject matter expert in space situational awareness.
- Experience with satellite payloads, and/or aerospace programs.
- Experience with image processing algorithm development.
- Experience with the modeling and simulation of sensor performance.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring of technical staff.
- 5 years of SDA technical experience.
- Project leadership experience and demonstrated ability to deliver results.
- Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain customer relationships.
- Experience with DOD and/or IC space organizations.
- Familiarity and experience with SDA and remote sensing modeling tools.
- Proficiency in Python, C++, STK, and/or MATLAB.
- Familiarity with multiple sensing and communications phenomenology: e.g. RF, SAR, Radar, EO/Vis, IR.

The Space Mission Engineering Program Office is focused on developing future program opportunities, engaging with key external communities, agencies, and industrial entities. We team with the broad S&T community to drive the development of technologies that differentiate Sandia as a key member of the Nation’s space community. We provide solutions to advance space situational awareness and space control. The department’s focus is on developing state-of-the-art capabilities to enable Space Mission Engineering program execution and Sandia’s National Security missions. We maintain expertise in software/hardware architectures, algorithm development, software engineering, object-oriented software design, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and astrodynamics that creates and delivers next generation software and hardware solutions to meet complex national security space missions.

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
