Saint Mary's College of California invites applications for an adjunct position for the MFA in Dance: Advanced West African Dance
The MFA in Dance educates the whole dance artist. Through the lens of a liberal arts curriculum, the program's values are shaped by the quest for truth, authenticity and community building in a holistic model that integrates mind, body and spirit. The MFA in Dance offers two unique MFA degrees in dance: Creative Practice and Design & Production. Creative Practice has a low-residency option and the Design & Production MFA is the only one in the country specifically for dance.
Responsibilities:
Saint Mary's College seeks to hire a per course adjunct faculty member to teach PERFA 522, Advanced West African Dance, in the MFA in Dance Graduate Program January Term 2025.
DANCE-522 Advanced West African Dance
January Term, 2025, In-Person SMC Campus
Janury 3-26, 2026.
In person SMC Campus, January 6-17, 2025, M-F 12:05-1:20pm
1 CU course.
The MFA in Dance is seeking an adjunct faculty member to teach the advanced West African course during the 2025 January term. The instructor must be available to teach from January 3rd-26th, with in person modality from the 6th-17th on campus in Moraga. This course is fully in person during the weeks of January 6th-10th and January 13th-17th.
Course Description:
Advanced studio instruction in West African dance forms. This course focuses on the art of West African dancing from Ghana as well as provides the necessary skills and understanding for an appreciation of the artistic, athletic, and social qualities of dance. Throughout the course, students will hone various concepts surrounding dance including music, history of dance, culture, etiquette, and application in social settings as well as stage performances.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have an MA, MFA or other terminal degree in the appropriate field or equivalent knowledge and experience in the field of dance or creative practice. They must demonstrate a strong commitment to student-centered teaching in the liberal arts tradition, and show evidence of teaching effectiveness among graduate students. Prior teaching experience and/or professional experience is preferred.
Salary: $2,482 - $3,436 depending on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
Candidates must reside in California.
