Position Description:

The University of Louisville’s Department of Anthropology is seeking a Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Research Coordinator V for a two-year, full-time position. This position reports to the Director of the Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (CACHe). The NAGPRA Coordinator will help implement CACHe's Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) compliance. The NAGPRA Coordinator will work directly with curated archaeological collections to confirm identifications and revise inventories as needed in preparation for consultation and repatriation. With the CACHe Director, they will also participate in consultations with tribal partners and representatives of state and federal agencies.

Organizationally situated within the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage is a teaching, research, and curation facility dedicated to the scholarly pursuit of knowledge about human cultures and biology, past and present. CACHe supports experiential student learning, academic service, and active research pursuits of the Department of Anthropology of the University of Louisville, including archaeology, ethnography, forensic anthropology, and biological anthropology. CACHe is a repository for regional archaeological collections, preserving them for future study and public exhibits. CACHe is a resource for collaborative research and is dedicated to engaged public outreach with the community of Portland, the city of Louisville, and the greater Falls of the Ohio River region.

Position Responsibilities

  • Collection Documentation (primary responsibility): Assist with updating collections databases including cataloging, entering/updating digital records, inventorying, researching object and/or material information

  • Documentation Support: Collaborate with the Director to prepare documents related to consultations and revise and resubmit inventories as needed

  • Consultation Preparation Support: Research Tribal contact information and locations, help draft NAGPRA letters, update contact tracking database, compile consultation notes

  • Consultation Participation Support: With the CACHe Director, participate in consultations with tribal partners

  • Remain current with NAGPRA regulations and updates and help revise CACHe procedures as needed and in consultation with tribal partners

  • Candidate will work with the CACHe NAGPRA advisory board throughout duration of the position

Preferred Qualifications

  • MA or PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field.

  • Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of and experience implementing the provisions of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) as required by NAGPRA regulations.

  • Candidates should have training in human osteology, bioarchaeology, and/or forensic anthropology including experience identifying fragmentary human remains.

  • Candidates should be familiar with NAGPRA policies and procedures for recording, reporting, and repatriating ancestral remains, associated funerary objects, unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony.

Target Compensation Maximum:

$68,900.00

Target Compensation Minimum:

$45,900.00

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
