Job Description

The Director of Student Success provides strategic direction for TC student success initiatives. The Director supervises the TC Student Success team, including the Assistant Director of Student Success and Coordinator of the Ryan Family Navigators Program. The director envisions, develops, and implements new and existing culturally responsive college-wide initiatives focusing on academic and career success, and increased student belonging and retention. The Director collaborates with staff and faculty within the college and across the university to provide culturally responsive programming, uses data-informed progress monitoring for continuous improvement, and communicates with Ball State administration about student success initiatives.

Job Function:

The Director of Student Success provides strategic direction for TC student success initiatives. The Director supervises the TC Student Success team, including the Assistant Director of Student Success and Coordinator of the Ryan Family Navigators Program. The director envisions, develops, and implements new and existing culturally responsive college-wide initiatives focusing on academic and career success, and increased student belonging and retention. The Director collaborates with staff and faculty within the college and across the university to provide culturally responsive programming, uses data-informed progress monitoring for continuous improvement, and communicates with Ball State administration about student success initiatives.

Minimum Education:

Master’s degree in education or a relevant field from an accredited institution by date of appointment.

Preferred Education:

Doctoral degree in education or relevant field from an accredited institution; completion of classes or coursework regarding data-informed decision-making for student success.

Minimum Experience:

Three years of experience developing and implementing student success and retention programming for diverse students in a secondary and/or higher education setting; experience using student data to inform individualized and programmatic decisions, including the use of various methods of assessment, data collection, and analysis; experience facilitating data-based meetings with multiple team members that resulted in evidence-based outcomes.

Preferred Experience:

Experience developing student success and retention initiatives for underrepresented or historically marginalized student groups; working knowledge of student support services (TRIO) programs; development of individualized interventions for students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic data-informed direction for expanding and developing TC student success initiatives, prioritizing culturally responsive and proactive interventions and opportunities. Develop strategies for coordination, promotion, and increased student involvement in activities. Collaborate with department heads, unit leads, and faculty in the college to ensure the success of students. Plan, evaluate, and revise procedures and practices for accomplishing the strategic goals of the college related to student services.
  • Lead college-wide efforts focused on student retention and consist of personnel across the college to implement best practices in the delivery of undergraduate student programming that engenders close ties to the college, supports retention goals, and creates community among students, faculty and staff.
  • Provide regular assessment of ongoing needs and services based on data collection; analyze trends and determine additional systems needed to support the mission of student success. Provide summaries and reports to inform the revision or development of student service program policies; propose and/or recommend changes to student service programs and initiatives.
  • Manage college systems and use data to inform progress- monitoring for continuous improvement. Identify, collect, and analyze data on retention, graduation and other indicators to inform decision making for undergraduate programs. Build and expand knowledge of university data systems to manage and assess college-wide student progress. Proactively share information across all units in the college to ensure effective communication. Identify gaps of service for improved efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead, collaborate, and participate in student programming and events to enhance recruitment, retention, and success. Collaborate with key offices and personnel, including academic advising, transfer office, University College, Teachers College’s living learning community, Office of Teacher Education Services-Clinical Practice, and TC’s faculty and staff to create and deliver culturally responsive student-centered academic and career workshops, social networking, and community-building events focusing on personal and career success, increased student engagement, retention, and graduation.
  • Develop relationships with incoming students and foster a sense of belonging and community. Provide holistic support, including direct student services for students’ academic, career, and personal pursuits. Provide direct services to students as needed.
  • Develop relationships with key offices to foster connections between students and the range of student services across campus. Develop and implement systems to support effective interventions for students in academic distress.
  • Serve on the university-wide Student Success Task Force and represent TC at appropriate internal and external learning and service opportunities and conferences.
  • Develop and implement professional learning opportunities for faculty and staff focused on developing culturally responsive, and strengths-based approaches for student success. Work with department administrators and faculty on issues related to student success in the classroom and overcoming degree completion barriers.
  • Design, support, and/or deliver student success courses as appropriate. Maintain responsibility for college-specific new student orientation and retention activities at the TC and university levels, including the design, coordination, implementation, and assessment of the Peer Mentoring Program and Jump Start.
  • Maintain knowledge of new research and scholarship in first year experience, retention, student success, academic advising, tutoring and learning assistance, and developmental education. Participate in a minimum of one workshop/activity/trainingannually (as approved by supervisor) that enhances a commitment to student success.
  • Maintain records, streamline record keeping processes, and provide documentation and reports related to program objectives, student participation, and progress. Track and report trends in undergraduate student matriculation, enrollment, persistence, and graduation using university programs. Consistently develop and document efforts and outcomes to increase the number of students who access student success services.
  • Coordinate student wellness and financial stability including communication about tuition balances.
  • Interface with marketing and communication personnel to use social media to promote programs, events, and activities and enhance student culture.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
