What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Electromechanical Technologist to conduct high-power-laser measurements. The successful applicant will align and perform bench top optical systems, assist setting up and executing high-energy laser tests in field environments while maintaining accurate and complete project documentation. You will be required work independently as well as to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and to interact with people with a variety of knowledge and expertise.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Develop, build, modify, repair, maintain, align, evaluate, operate, and experiment with a wide variety of mechanical/optical/laser apparatus and equipment.
- Devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified laboratory components or assemblies.
- Set up and test complete prototype units and subassemblies under operational conditions.
- Analyze data and recommend modifications to components or test procedures to meet desired specifications.
- Set up instrumentation, data acquisition, and imaging systems to gather data on high consequence events.
- Maintain and repair the laboratory, equipment, and instrumentation.
- Maintain lab chemical, safety, instrumentation calibration and hardware inventory databases as required by corporate policy.
- Operate heavy equipment to move concrete blocks, steel walls, or large test fixtures.
Able and willing to support occasional travel.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$70,200 - $135,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Associate degree in mechanical, electrical, or photonics technology; OR high school diploma, plus three (3) or more years of relevant experience.
- Experience performing technical laboratory work effectively in high consequence environments, s uch as explosive, high voltage, and radioactive related processes.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant STEM field.
- Experience with the following:
- Working with Class 4 lasers, optical labs, high-temperature material science, plasma physics, or other relevant research areas.
- With or able to learn operation of oscilloscopes, high speed cameras, infrared cameras, integrating spheres, beam profilers and other laser diagnostics.
- With safely work in hazardous environments.
- Working with high voltage components and systems.
- Data acquisition instrumentation familiarity. National Instruments PXI hardware preferred.
- Electrical/mechanical/optical assembly/design ability.
- Solidworks, Diadem, LabView, Matlab, Zeemax, Multisim, Utiliboard or similar software packages or willingness and ability to learn.
- Qualified or willing to be qualified as a Laser Safety Officer.
- Active DOE Q-level or DOD Top-Secret Security Clearance.
About Our Team:
The Explosive Engineering Operations department (Org 6649) specializes in the design, development, and characterization of explosive systems through the design of energetic devices, experimental validation of energetic device performance, interior and terminal ballistic effects, and high-power laser effects research. We collaborate with multiple Sandia departments to ensure continued innovation and success to serve customers from DOE/NNSA, DoD, DOJ, DHS, and other government agencies via IHNS, DSA, and NW SMUs.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
