Position Description:

The Associate Dean for Administration (ADA) for the School of Public Health and Information Sciences (SPHIS) oversees a wide range of executive and project support for the dean, leading strategy development and execution of high-priority objectives and advancing and coordinating the work of the dean’s office to promote the school’s priorities and academic mission. The ADA functions as a senior member of the dean’s leadership team, advising the dean, associate deans, department chairs and others. The ADA serves as a strategic advisor to the dean, prioritizing issues requiring the dean’s attention, and ensuring timely execution on matters that advance the school's goals, objectives, and priorities.The ADA is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing decision-making processes, ensuring that projects stay on track and align with the school’s strategic goals. This position is a non-tenure eligible (i.e., term) faculty position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serves in the capacity of advisor to the Dean in interactions with colleagues across the schools and university to ensure institutional alignment with strategic initiatives, including maximizing relationships with university leadership, Board of Trustees, donors, alumni, students and other key stakeholders. Responsible for executive oversight of school services including communications, philanthropy, facilities management and space planning, ITS, human resources and logistics. This includes supervision of personnel responsible for these activities. Manages a large, complex grant that involves interactions with community partners, funders, faculty from across campus, and university leadership at the highest levels. This includes oversight of a multi-million-dollar budget and all grant personnel. This is anticipated to be a large part of the position. Develops and operationalizes change management processes to successfully achieve strategic project requirements. Works with the assistant dean of finance to develop reporting systems and processes to ensure the school is fully informed of the operational impacts of local and enterprise decisions. Oversees the daily operations of the school and provides leadership in the development and implementation of integrated business, operational and administrative programs, structures and systems across the school. Plans, develops and implements strategies for generating enhanced school operations. Accountable for integration of diverse and sometimes competing stakeholders and programs such that alignment is reached and maintained to assure that overall goals and mission of the school are attained. Coordinates and implements strategic initiatives through (1) establishment of management processes, (2) ensuring appropriate financial controls (in collaboration with the assistant dean of finance) and (3) managing, directing, and monitoring deliverables associated with strategic initiatives using project management methodologies. Coordinates and interacts heavily with senior leaders and executives, external affiliate leadership, and other external partners on a diverse range of strategic, operational, political, and organizational matters, including management of the Deans Leadership Council.Coordinates closely with the Advancement office on fundraising strategy and goals. Assists the dean with problem song issues and subject matters requiring considerable sensitivity, discretion, judgement and negotiation.Prepares and/or contributes to the preparation of reports, proposals, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues, researching and recommending new and revised systems and strategies.

Minimum Requirements

Doctoral degree and ten years of relevant experience in higher education or related fields. Experience should demonstrate the ability to manage complex projects and across various audiences and leadership levels. Experience with managing human resources, strategic planning and large grants is required. Experience in managing health equity research is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • C-suite and previous experience in an operations leadership prole preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in communications and public relations a plus.

Competencies

  • Experience working with university senior officers on different aspects of strategic academic and administrative issues.

  • Working knowledge of issues, challenges and emerging trends in public health and health equity research.

  • Demonstrated capacity to work both collaboratively and independently, to exercise sound judgment, and to handle sensitive and confidential matters.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a complex and diverse community.

  • Demonstrated track record of managing large, complex research projects supported by extramural funds. This includes experience with research project budget and personnel management.

  • A capacity to embrace change and identify creative and innovative solutions to complex problems.
