Job Summary
Augusta University's proposed new School of Public Health seeks a Department Chair in Community and Behavioral Health. The Department Chair is the chief academic officer for the department and is responsible for oversight and implementation of departmental programs, policies, and activities within the limits established by AU regulations, Faculty Senate policies and School rules and procedures.
The Chair shall seek the advice of members of the department, individually or as a group, or of advisory committees that the Chair may appoint. Staff employees shall be consulted, when appropriate, by the Chair, in the development of any departmental administrative policies and on decisions that directly affect them. The Chair shall speak for the department. If the Chair believes it necessary to depart from the opinion of the department faculty, the Chair shall communicate the department faculty's opinion as well as the Chair's recommendation, stating reasons for differing from the department faculty's opinion, and notify the department faculty of such action.
The applicant should have significant experience teaching graduate level courses and supervising MS and PhD-level students. They should also have a successful track record of extramural funding and peer-reviewed publications appropriate for appointment at the level of associate or full professor. This position is considered on tenure track.
Responsibilities
Administrative: 50%

Serve as a member of the Dean's leadership team.
Serve as liaison between the department, the school, and the university and represent the department within and outside the university.
Assume responsibility for the quality of instruction, research and service conducted by department faculty.
Preside at all department meetings, except when the Chair delegates this function. S/he may appoint advisory committees to support the work of the department and is an ex officio member of all department committees.
Responsible for recommendations to the Dean on the appointment of new faculty employees of the department, promotions, reappointments, terminal appointments, post-retirement appointments, the granting of tenure, and decisions not to reappoint.
Responsible for making recommendations on faculty salaries, salary changes, and workload, in accordance with processes outlined by AU regulations and policies.
Responsible for the periodic evaluation of department faculty members by procedures and criteria established by the University, the college, and the department faculty.
Responsible for providing guidance and mentoring faculty efforts to meet established criteria for promotion and/or tenure.
Collaborates with the dean to set a budget for the department and administers the budget after its approval.
Responsible for overseeing any administrative staff supporting the activities of the department.
Research - 35%
Seek external funds, exhibit potential to sustain a funded research program, publish in top-tier peer-reviewed journals relevant to community or behavioral health sciences, present at professional meetings, and mentor student research. Successful candidates will pursue extramurally funded research in areas that complement the existing strengths of the department, school, and university.
Teaching - 10%
Teach up to one course per year within the SPH or CBHS, advise graduate students, and/or participate in other school educational programs.
Service - 5%
Provide service to the department, school, and University through participation in committees, working groups or task forces. Provide service to the profession through involvement in professional organizations, reviewing journal manuscripts, or serving as peer-review panel member for grant applications.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have earned a Doctoral degree in public health, health services research, psychology, health promotion social science, or similar discipline.
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience. Per Board of Regents (BOR) policy, Professors must have a terminal degree.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
' Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements for institutional accreditation;
' Evidence of ability as a teacher;
' Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
' Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
' Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading/managing an academic department, educational program, and/or research center is also highly desirable.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
