Augusta University's Department of English and World Languages is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of English specializing in African American Literature anticipated to begin August 2025. We seek individuals who can teach courses in African American literature; other courses may include postcolonial, diasporic, transatlantic, and multiethnic literature, according to the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate. Responsibilities
  • Teach 5 courses per academic year to include Introductory Composition Courses
  • Maintain regular office hours; advising; grading; and following university policies regarding teaching (e.g., reporting attendance and holding final exams during assigned times)
  • Create, update, and submit course syllabi to the department
  • Maintain ambitious scholarly agenda
  • Promote student success by engaging in activities that enhance student learning and position learners to be successful in achieving their short- term and long-term academic, career, and personal growth goals.
  • Participate in shared governance of department, college, and university as assigned.

Required Qualifications
PhD in English or a related field; applications from ABDs will be considered, but the PhD must be in hand by start date.
Assistant Professor- Terminal degree (or nearing its completion), or its equivalent in training, ability, and/or experience.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Possible secondary expertise in literature of the diaspora, postcolonial literature, Indigenous literature(s) of the Americas, or multiethnic literature
  • Passionate about writing instruction
  • Experience teaching first-year writing/college composition

Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.
Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
