What You Will Achieve
The successful candidate will oversee the development and growth of the Safety and Industrial Hygiene (IH) program for the Pfizer Kalamazoo Michigan site. General responsibilities include strong leadership and collaboration with leaders of all site functions to establish and execute the Safety and Industrial Hygiene plan for the site. Specific responsibilities include providing strategic leadership and guidance to achieve Safety and Industrial Hygiene related performance objectives, compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and Pfizer internal standards, as well as representing the Corporation’s interests by interacting and negotiating with State and local regulators. This is a highly visible role that requires promoting an Incident and Injury Free mindset and ongoing culture transformation. This role reports to the Director of EHS and Security.
How You Will Achieve It
Serve as site Safety and IH Leader and supervise Safety and IH Team members.
Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, Pfizer standards and industry consensus standards.
Create the strategic plan to identify injury reduction and risk mitigation strategies and to work with site leadership to create and implement accompanying action plans.
Lead gap assessments of existing programs, identify continuous improvement opportunities, and lead the Safety and IH Team to close gaps and implement solutions.
Champion cultural change at the site through acting as the VPP liaison and as well as other cultural initiatives.
Establish and execute Leading Safety Indicators and other key EHS metrics for the site.
Define the strategic plan for capital projects to ensure appropriate risk mitigation strategies are incorporated.
Manage departmental budget.
Manage the direction and execution of all safety and industrial hygiene programs and provides direction, training, and leadership to the safety committees, business unit leaders, and safety contacts.
Conducts safety training and awareness sessions for employees and ensures training is delivered and documented on an ongoing basis.
Designs the safety training curriculum and ensures it is updated regularly.
Continuously drive improvement in health and safety measures.
Assists in preparing the required plans and appropriate facility operating procedures or checklists.
Serves as a contact for federal, state and regional health and safety agencies.
Facilitates emergency response protocols.
Participates in accident investigations, performs root cause analysis for all injuries and “near misses”; trains operations supervisors to conduct thorough investigations and root cause analysis.
Maintains knowledge of all applicable corporate, federal, state and local health and safety regulatory requirements. Stays abreast of developing regulatory requirements, particularly on a state and local level. Keep operations informed of new and developing regulations.
Manages the direction and execution of all safety programs and provides direction, training, and leadership to the safety committees, business unit leaders, and safety contacts.
Qualifications
Must-Have:
- Applicant must have a Bachelor's degree in in Engineering, Science or EHS related field and 7 years of professional experience or a Master's degree in in Engineering, Science or EHS related field and 6 years of professional experience or PhD degree with minimum 3 years of experience.
- Minimum of 5- 10 years of experience in leading an EHS team.
- Extensive experience in all safety programs.
- Detailed expertise in the risk management (assessment and implementation of risk mitigation strategies).
- Safety practitioner with broad technical and regulatory experience.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficient in MS Office applications.
Nice-to-Have:
Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene.
Experience in the Pharmaceutical industry.
Knowledge of MIOSHA rules and regulations.
CSP, CIH or other EHS related professional certification.
Experience with Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing.
Physical/Mental Requirements:
Must be able to perform field observations which could involve walking or standing on uneven terrain, squatting, bending, twisting, turning, and reaching above shoulder height and work in various climates from extreme cold to heat.
May require walking, standing, and or sitting for prolonged periods.
Must be able to walk and drive between site facilities on the site.
Excellent project management and problem-solving skills.
Non-Standard Work Schedule, Travel, or Environment Requirements:
This role is standard day Monday through Friday work shift; may require some off-shift support weekend and off hours work required on occasion. Support be on call.
