Job Description
Job Summary/Basic Function:Under general supervision maintains biosecurity of facility according to standard operating procedures, including operation of sanitization and sterilization equipment. Cleans, sanitizes, and sterilizes animal cages, feeders, water bottles, and supplies to maintain an appropriate environment for research animals. Maintains records of sanitization and sterilization activities to meet requirements of compliance of oversight committees and agencies. This position provides a learning environment for the employee to develop the skills and knowledge needed to attain a position providing care and husbandry to research animals.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and one year of full-time related work experience OR a high school diploma or equivalent and a Veterinary Technology degree from an accredited program.
Must be able to review, comprehend, and comply with all standard operating procedures. Excellent verbal communication skills.
Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and move heavy equipment.
Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, reach, or crouch while working. May be required to work on weekends and holidays.
Certifications or Licensures Required:
Must possess a valid United States driver’s license for at least one year and maintain eligibility to operate University motor vehicles.
Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within eighteen (18) months of employment required.
Preferred Qualifications
Essential Functions and percent of time:
Maintains sanitation and sterilization programs for animal cages, racks, watering devices and disposes of waste in accordance with established guidelines. (10%)
Operates cage washer, tunnel washer, autoclave, and other equipment. (30%)
Performs routine cleaning and sanitization of animal rooms, equipment, corridors, and support areas according to written standard operating procedures. (10%)
Receives and stores food and bedding in accordance with established guidelines. (5%)
Provides assistance during special procedures by acting under the direction of others to facilitate research and/or clinical activities. (5%)
Transports experimental animals, caging, supplies, and equipment to various sites. (5%)
Maintains records of sanitization and sterilization equipment verification tests, facility cleaning and sanitization activities as applicable. (10%)
Handles and restrains animals by using appropriate techniques. (10%)
Observes animal appearance and behavior and reports subtle changes. (15%)

Working Conditions
There are conditions, equipment and materials present which require proper handling to ensure safety. Requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds. Frequent walking, bending, and standing. May be required to work on weekends and holidays. Physical exam is required.
