What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Special Programs Operations department within Mission Engineering Sciences is seeking a Distinguished IT Cybersecurity Architect (job title: IT Cyber Assurance Architect) to join our team and lead the evolution of our overall cybersecurity infrastructure towards mission resilience, assured delivery at operational tempo, and “born secure” IT architectures. Your visionary and technical leadership will develop capacity in our team to deliver next-generation innovation for challenging technical deliverables across all IT system domains, as well as proactively provide situational awareness for tactical and long-term cyber threats.
The successful candidate will become a part of department 08779, within the Special Operations Group. This department designs and develops innovative IT solutions across all network domains by leveraging various next-generation technologies and capabilities. Our one-of-a-kind capabilities cross multiple engineering disciplines and technical skillsets, all focused on delivering complex operational solutions to our broad mission customer base.
On any given day you may be called on to:
- Lead large teams of 25+ engineering staff, contractors, and external mission partners to design and deliver unique IT capabilities
- Engage with sponsors to propose and develop solutions to significant national security challenges in both the cloud and non-cloud environments
- Partner across Sandia’s Cyber Mission Centers to understand Sandia’s unique capabilities and awareness of cybersecurity threats to cloud and non-cloud environments, and build teams that bring the best capabilities
- Develop relationships with key stakeholders across government and industry toward achieving long-term security focused solutions
- Be a resource for subject matter expertise and collaboration across the center, the Labs and other government agencies
- Support strategic staffing initiatives and engage in staff mentoring and development
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite in California.
Salary Range:
$178,300 - $302,900
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A PhD in a STEM field with 5+ years of relevant experience in cybersecurity; or Master’s degree in STEM with 9+ years relevant experience in cybersecurity; or Bachelor’s degree in STEM with 13+ years of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
- Two or more years of experience working with commercial cloud environments such as AWS and/or Azure
- Ability to travel as needed (approximately quarterly)
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level and SCI-level security clearance, which requires a polygraph test
Qualifications We Desire:
- Extensive familiarity with US Government civilian cyber mission partners (e.g. DOD and various OGA Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security agencies)
- Recognized as an expert in the area of cloud and non-cloud cybersecurity with demonstrated technical leadership
- Related Cloud Certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect, Certified Cloud Security Professional, or similar)
- Demonstrated technical and strategic leadership of large (10+ staff) team
- Ability to foster collaboration and engagement
- Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills, with an ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely
- Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing junior team members
- Excellent time management skills involving managing multiple projects with changing priorities
- Demonstrated success partnering with geographically dispersed customer base
- Demonstrated creativity and success in delivering innovative and novel solutions that are responsive to complex customer mission needs and constraints
- Active DOE Q clearance and SCI access
About Our Team:
The Special Programs Operations (SPO) Department is responsible for executing and coordinating a variety of classified efforts at SNL's California site. These critical efforts entail providing communications services to multiple customers. We work closely with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), and Intelligence Community (IC) to accomplish these efforts. The centerpiece to this effort is the manning and support of an on-site 24/7/365 Mission Support operations center. We also have charters to 1) Develop processes and procedures for the acceptance, operationalization, and accreditation of new capabilities, 2) Manage ongoing accreditation of the IT and software systems, 3) Develop of innovative IT systems to reduce the total lifecycle costs for the broad range of capabilities being executed.

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
