Job Description

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an outstanding Research and Development Undergraduate Summer Intern - Undergraduate with applied math, optimization, or operations research expertise. The intern will contribute data analysis, computer science, and mathematical analysis skills to projects related to national and global security domains.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work as part of a team to define and solve complex problems
  • Assist with data analysis, develop mathematical formulations, and write software code
  • Prepare analysis of results, including written reports and presentations

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Math, Applied Math, Operations Research, or a closely related field
  • Proven ability to conduct research and development
  • Proven strong software development skills and familiarity with modern software development methodologies, practices, and tools
  • Experience working successfully with researchers, analysts, and software engineers
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form

About Our Team:

The Complex Systems for National Security Group (Group 5520 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) researches and applies operations research and computer science to analyze, predict and influence the behavior of complex, highly interdependent systems critical to our nation’s security. We provide capabilities motivated by the challenge of understanding, quantifying, and controlling the resilience of key complex systems critical to the laboratories’ National Security mission. The approaches and capabilities we provide are used to address complicated system and enterprise-level challenges facing a diverse set of national security partners.

Department 5521, Operations Research and Computational Analysis, is one of five departments in the Group. The department supports a wide variety of internal and external customers through mathematical modeling, analysis, and software development. We develop models and software products in the areas of optimization, simulation, statistics, decision theory, data querying and analysis, knowledge management, embedded systems, situational awareness and sensor data management. Our software development efforts are normally performed by small teams that stay closely involved with users and stakeholders throughout the software life cycle.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
