College/Department Information
The Medical College of Georgia Department of Physiology's focus is the framework of the body's cells, organs and systems, how they work, and how abnormal function leads to disease. The department is dedicated to outstanding research and excellence in education. Our federally funded scientists study some of the nation's top killers like cardiovascular disease and hypertension, and train independent, creative, productive scholars and PhD graduates, who publish in top tier journals and who are competitive for positions wherever they choose to go. The department offers programs leading to the PhD degree. By virtue of their interdisciplinary training, the department's graduates compete successfully for positions in medical schools, universities, government, and industry.
Job Summary
This position provides administrative and technical oversight in a cardiorenal research laboratory in the Department of Physiology, and it requires the daily performance of routine and complex chemical, biological and animal tissue preparation in the setting of a basic science research lab. In addition, the position will conduct experiments and record the experimental results in the lab. Responsible for accuracy of results and retesting when appropriate. Maintain laboratory supplies and chemical reagents. Performs blood sampling, blood pressure studies and data acquisition, analyses, and tabulation. Experiments include functional measures of blood pressure and vascular function, protein and mRNA expression measures as well as hormone, cell signaling and genetic analyses, among others.
The successful candidate will join a NIH-funded project (PI, Dr. Paul OConnor). Studies are approached with a translational perspective and the overall goal is to study the physiological pathways involved in the regulation of kidney function and how disruptions in these pathways can lead to disease.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
EXPERIMENTS: Perform research experiments under the direction of the PI, lab manager and/or postdoctoral fellow/s and research assistants.
ANIMAL: Prepare laboratory animals for surgery; perform surgical procedures as instructed; collect tissue and fluid samples for analysis; and assist with feeding, watering and general care of the animals (both pre- and post-operative).
LAB OPERATIONS: Order, maintain and catalog supply and equipment inventory (chemical reagents, small value equipment, etc.) as well as coordinate the ordering of laboratory animals.
DATA ANALYSIS: Record and analyze results of research experiments and procedures.
TELEMETRY STUDIES: Coordinate telemetry studies for lab. Operate computer-based data acquisition systems, chart recorders and signal amplification equipment.
MEDIA: Participate in preparation of media, stains and reagents.
RESEARCH EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE: Calibrate, troubleshoot and make minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
OTHER: Perform other duties incidental to work described herein.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization supplemented by two years of college level work in the physical and/or biological sciences, and experience in performing diagnostic laboratory tests and examinations in the specialized area assigned to work.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have some experience in a research lab and preferably in the kidney field.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to be self-motivated. Ability to work with research animals such as rodents.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Pay Band: B4
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
