There is always something new to learn as the field of ophthalmology continues to grow and advance. Ophthalmic Assistants provide vision care under the supervision of a licensed ophthalmologist and assist with taking patient histories, performing diagnostic tests and procedures, patient scheduling, and exam room preparation.
This is a full-time position. Caregivers in this role will work 8:00am to 5:00pm. Schedules may vary based on facility needs.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties and perform basic patient care as directed by a physician or supervisor.
- Receive and prepare patients for examination and treatment under the direction of a supervisor or physician.
- Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties for high acuity patient populations including patients admitted to the hospital and/or those with critical patient care needs.
- Perform routine screening tests and document patient information in the patient medical record.
- Stock and maintain exam rooms with equipment and supplies.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High school diploma or GED
- Successful completion of the written exam for Certified Ophthalmic Assistant
- Recent graduate of an Ophthalmic Technology Program (not yet COT certified)
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
- One year of experience providing direct patient care under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist

Physical Requirements:
- Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
- May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
- Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
Pay Range
Minimum hourly: $16.47
Maximum hourly: $23.61

A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set and education.
