Associate or Full Professor / Department Chair - Mathematics (Tenure-track)

Hiring Department
The University of Texas Permian Basin Department of Mathematics welcomes applications for a tenure-track faculty member to serve as the Academic Department Chair for the Department at the Associate or Full Professor rank. UTPB offers a competitive salary and relocation expenses. The anticipated start date is August 2026. Priority will be given to applications received by January 10, 2026.

Salary Range
$85,000.00 depending on qualifications
Essential Functions
The successful candidate must advocate for students, faculty, department goals, and programs. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership skills (contributes through direct teaching, research/scholarship, and service). Serves as a role model in these areas, relevant administrative experience, and a commitment to the education and mentorship of students and faculty. The department chair is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and administration of the department.
- Pursuing and achieving departmental excellence in teaching, research, and service.
- Maintaining an environment of collegiality and shared governance.
- Taking leadership in ensuring relevant department curricula and obtain-ing/maintaining accreditation.
- Supervising faculty and assure they perform all duties commensurate with their workload and assignments.
- Working with faculty to develop and implement strategic initiatives and pro-gramming to help ensure student success.
- Recruitment, retention, evaluation, and promotion of faculty;
- Developing with the faculty a series of short- and long-term goals for the De-partment in harmony with the University's and College's strategic plans.
- Managing the department budget and other resources.
- Addressing questions, complaints, grievances, and suggestions from faculty, staff, and students;
- Performing other duties as assigned by the dean
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field
  • Current academic rank of tenured associate or full professor
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated administrative skills
  • Distinguished record of teaching, service, and research
    Preferred Qualifications
    1. College-level teaching experience, which may include teaching labs as a graduate student.
    2. Ability to teach in various areas of the program.
    3. Experience with students' academic mentoring.

    From the Department
    The College of Engineering and Sciences is a newly formed College as of 2024. The College offers B.S. in Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering as well as B.S. in Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, and Mathematics and M.S. in Computer Science and Geology. The Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering Programs are ABET Accredited. The College is also home to the Texas Water and Energy Institute and the newly opened Advanced Manufacturing Center. The College is housed in building that opened 2019, with excellent facilities for instructional and curricular activities and research and development.

    Conditions of Employment

    Schedule
    Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Faculty hours may differ based on class schedule and department need.

    Standard Working Conditions
    1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
    2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
    3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.
    4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
    5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
    6. Standard working conditions may differ depending on department and occupation.
