The Department of English in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina invites applications for its vacant Carolina Core Programs Coordinator position. This full-time position provides administrative support for two different sets of Carolina Core (general education) programs housed in the English Department: (1) First-Year English (FYE), which administers all foundational writing courses on the Columbia campus, serving over 8,000 students annually in ~400 sections of ENGL 101 and 102; and (2) the programs in Speech Communication and Social Advocacy and Ethical Life (SPCH & SAEL), which together administer over 250 sections annually of foundational public speaking courses (e.g., SPCH 140, 145, 213, 230, 260 and SAEL 200), serving ~5,500 students each year. Working closely with their respective directors (2), this position helps to coordinate the scheduling and staffing of these two different sets of programs; serves as the primary program contact for students, faculty, other university offices, and the general public; collects, updates, aggregates, and archives data; and provides other programmatic administrative support as needed.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services, Education, or related field and 2 years related experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Excellent organizational skills, communication skills (written and oral), initiative, efficiency, and follow through. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, equipment and software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Excel, Microsoft Word, Teams, Zoom, Adobe). Ability to work independently and effectively with faculty, staff, students, other university offices, and the general public. Ability to ensure accuracy of work and maintain privacy (e.g., re student information). Highly desirable: experience working with Excel spreadsheets, Blackboard, and other USC systems (Banner, SSC, Data Warehouse, etc.). Familiarity with USC policies, procedures, and offices also extremely helpful. Flexibility and the capacity to adapt to rapidly changing systems.

FYE — Scheduling: each semester works closely with Director of FYE to coordinate scheduling class times, classrooms, and teaching assignments for ~100 FYE instructors, including Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), adjuncts, and faculty. Communicates with the Registrar and other relevant university offices as needed.

FYE — Daily administration of First-Year English program: supports FYE Director and Associate Director in the administration of the FYE Program. Serves as primary program contact for all FYE students and instructors, university offices (e.g., Office of Academic Integrity, Student Disability Resource Center, the Writing Center, Student Affairs and Academic Support, the Dodie Center), and the general public, responding to inquiries by telephone, email, and walk-ins. Answers queries re overrides and registration; provides resources and referrals as needed in response to concerns about grades and other matters; assigns, distributes, and collects office and mailbox keys; coordinates scheduling of peer observations; posts notices for class cancelations; assists Director and Associate Director with annual FYE instructor orientation, teaching awards, and other initiatives as needed; advises FYE students, parents, instructors, and administrators about relevant program and university policies and procedures, and relevant state and federal laws (e.g., FERPA).
