About the Department
Enterprise Application Services (EAS) is in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) division at North Carolina State University. EAS is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, enhancement & maintenance of the University’s enterprise business applications, databases, data warehouses, and business intelligence/analytics platforms. This includes: development, operation & maintenance of all enterprise administrative systems (Financials, HR, MyPack Portal, Non-Credit (REPORTER), Research Administration (RED), and Student Information Systems, Business Intelligence, etc.), configuration management, maintenance, enhancements, and application integration.

Essential Job Duties
Enterprise Application Services (EAS) in the Office of Information Technology seeks a Data Engineer for our Enterprise Data Platform team. This position conducts the technical design, development, and operational support of the University’s centralized repository of enterprise data assets.

The position is responsible for building and maintaining an efficient and scalable data platform solution that enables business intelligence and analytics solutions that provide actionable data to campus. The Enterprise Data Engineer collaborates with the data architect, enterprise application developers, data analysts, and BI content developers to build the data platform infrastructure that is needed for data-driven decision-making across the University.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Master’s degree in data science and at least two years of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.
Other Required Qualifications
Proficiency in data engineering concepts, warehouse, data modeling, and ETL, as well as modern data platform/cloud approaches such as lakehouses, pipelines, and ELT, with experience integrating heterogeneous data sources into coherent data structures
Experience developing in a structured Software Development Lifecycle environment
Proficiency in RDBMS, SQL, database design principles
Excellent problem solving, analytical and evaluative skills with an ability to resolve complex, difficult technical issues
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both technical and non-technical subjects including the ability to communicate effectively with peers, management, and senior management.
Preferred Qualifications
Proven experience building data platform structures in a Data Engineering role on a variety of platforms and toolsets with particular preference for experience with Microsoft Fabric, and/or Azure Synapse, Data Factory, Data Lake, or Databricks.
Experience building data platforms in a higher education environment, including familiarity with data structures specific to the academic and administrative operations of a large research university
Experience with Oracle database design and development, particularly in a warehouse or data mart context, and SQL, PL/SQL
Knowledge of Oracle database performance optimization
Thorough knowledge of analytics platforms and data visualization toolsets, such as Power BI, Tableau, SAS Visual Analytics, etc.
Advanced programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, and data analysis and manipulation languages like SAS, PL/SQL and DAX
Experience building and maintaining data pipelines, using technologies such as PySpark in Fabric or Azure Databricks
Certification(s) in Data Architecture, Big Data, Data Engineering, Integrations, and other relevant technologies
Experience working in agile project management environments
