Job Summary
Provide advanced technical expertise for the design, integration, and operational support of research technology and computing systems that support Augusta University's research enterprise, including research computing, high-performance computing (HPC), and artificial intelligence initiatives. This position is responsible for developing, integrating, and maintaining secure, scalable, and compliant research systems and data workflows that support clinical, academic, and administrative research activities. The Senior Research Systems Engineer leads systems
integration, interoperability, and technical solution design to ensure research platforms align with institutional standards, regulatory requirements, and evolving research needs while enabling effective, sustainable use of shared research infrastructure.
Responsibilities
RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS SUPPORT: Design, implement, maintain, optimize, and support research technology systems, enterprise platforms, and interoperable solutions that support research administration, compliance, operational workflows, research computing, HPC, and AI-enabled services.
SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND ENHANCEMENT: Analyze system requirements, troubleshoot issues, and implement enhancements, upgrades, patches, performance improvements, and configuration changes across assigned research systems and computing platforms.
SYSTEMS INTEGRATION AND AUTOMATION: Develop, support, and maintain integrations, data flows, automation, APIs, and technical solutions that improve interoperability, reliability, security, compliance, and efficiency across research systems and shared infrastructure.
TECHNICAL MENTORING AND TRAINING: Provide mentoring, cross-training, and advanced technical guidance to team members and users to support effective, sustainable use of research systems, shared computing resources, and related technologies.
TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION AND STANDARDS: Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, procedures, configuration records, and system support materials for research platforms, integrations, and operational workflows.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL SYSTEMS COLLABORATION: Collaborate with researchers, faculty, administrators, vendors, and IT teams to gather requirements, plan changes, design solutions, and support project delivery aligned with institutional standards, regulatory requirements, and evolving research needs.
SUPPORT: Perform other duties as assigned in support of research computing, HPC, AI-enabled environments, institutional priorities, and divisional goals.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and six years of experience in research computing or systems administration OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university and eight years of experience in research computing or systems administration.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting research technology and computing services in a higher education, research, or academic medical center environment. Experience integrating research and enterprise systems, platforms, or data sources in a complex institutional setting. Experience supporting secure, compliant, and service-oriented technical environments used for research activities. Proficiency with scripting, automation, version control, and related tools used in systems support and operational efficiency. Experience working in cross-functional teams with architects, engineers, vendors, and research stakeholders to deliver technical solutions. Research technology and computing systems, including research computing, HPC, AI, and related enterprise research services. Systems administration, APIs, ETL workflows, secure data exchange, and database connectivity across institutional platforms. Linux/Unix administration, scripting, automation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimization in complex service environments.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Research technology and computing systems that support research operations, data services, and enterprise platforms.
Linux/Unix operating systems, system integration methods, and distributed computing concepts.
Databases, ETL processes, APIs, and secure data transfer methods.
Compliance frameworks and institutional standards, including HIPAA, FERPA, GDPR, and IRB requirements.
Scripting, automation, virtualization, containerization, and cloud technologies used in technical service environments.
SKILLS
Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills.
Linux administration, shell scripting, and systems troubleshooting.
System integration, API support, and ETL workflow development.
Software installation, configuration, and support in research and enterprise environments.
Monitoring, diagnostics, and performance tuning across systems and services.
Strong written and verbal communication, documentation, and customer support skills.
ABILITIES

Analyze system, integration, and performance issues and develop effective technical solutions.

Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; M-F (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary: $95,200/annually-$121,400/annually
Pay Band: B16
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
