Minimum Experience/EducationHigh school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Graduation from an accredited MLT/MT/MLS program and passing a national exam given by Board of registry of American Society for Clinical Pathologists or other equivalent agencies. Prefer at least one year of experience of working in a clinical lab.
Basic lab and communication principles generally acquired through MLT/MT programs and work experience.
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a biological Science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required License or Certification
Licensure or certification as a medical technologist, public health microbiologist approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist.
Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position serves patients by providing medical laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic information. Performs routine laboratory test procedures on human body fluid and tissue to provide accurate data to the healthcare team. Adheres to quality assurance and quality control procedures in performing all testing. Makes decisions about the accuracy of test results, instrument operation, specimen suitability, and uses sound clinical judgment.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Mission of the student health center is to provide curative and preventative health care services to the students of North Carolina A&T State University. We provide services according to recommended standards, based upon current medical and health related information, in order to accommodate the unique needs of each individual.
Our goal is to be central support to N.C. A&T State University’s educational programs. We seek to prevent/reduce time lost from the course of study and strive to improve the quality of life for the A&T community and the public at large. Our overall goal of the student health center is to maintain a healthy environment in which students, faculty, and staff are able to achieve their educational goals. Work Hours Monday - Friday 10 am - 7 pm

Required Competency Coordination - Work
Duties
Maintains medical laboratory productivity by monitory workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slacks periods; making operational or staffing adjustment.
Implements new programs, test, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress.
Complies with state and professional continuing education licensure requirements by providing in -service program; monitory outcomes.
Bills for services by completing request for service; monitoring billed nits; providing the billing office with service codes.
Required Competency Data Collection/Analysis
Duties
Make and record scientific observations accurately, prepare and present scientific records and reports and observe safety precautions.
Perform standardized hematologic and chemistry test on body fluids. Perform complete blood counts on whole blood using the ABX micros 60. Perform finger sticks on students and analyze their blood for glucose, and cholesterol using the Accu-Chek.
Calculate and interpret various statistical procedures and initiate corrective actions. Interpret the levy Jennings graphs for ABX Micros 60.
Perform and document QC and Strep A, Chlamydia, Bayer contour glucose, Accoutered glucose and cholesterol, Oxidase droppers, Gram stains, Gonogen III and Gonorrhea cultures.
Read wet preps, Hematology differential slides, gram stains, and KOH preps.
Perform phlebotomy.
Required Competency Laboratory Management
Duties
Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
Maintains medical laboratory supplies inventory by checking in stock to determine inventory level
Maintain quality results by participating in the quality assurance program; consulting with pathologists; perforating proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintain records.
Participate in the American Proficiency Institute (API) Testing Program as designated by API.
Participate in Quality Control (QC) programs and understand current accreditation standards. Run daily Micros 60 QC. Print out monthly Micros 60 QC and enter it online. Interpret all peer comparison QC. Implement corrective action if necessary.
Perform weekly concentrate cleaning on micros 60.
Maintain label for COLA inspections and AAACH.
Maintain lab for CLIA inspections.
Main communication between Solstas reference lab representatives, supply vendors, and Student Health Center.
Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties

Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing
Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens
Verifies accuracy of results before reporting results
Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
Reports results within time limits established for test procedures and reports abnormal, critical values and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the supervisor.
Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur.
Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions when handling blood and/or body fluids.
Follows established chemical hygiene plan.
Maintains work area-cleans bench, restocks supplies.
Adheres to all HIPAA privacy and security policies and practices. Reports violations and incidents they observe and cooperates in investigations as requested by management.
Required Competency Laboratory Operations
Duties
Directs laboratory during absence of director. Trains ancillary personnel and declares them to be proficient.
Coordinate schedule of lab techs and phlebotomist. Must maintain adequate coverage in lab during all operational times.
Evaluates proficiency of new hires and trains them.
