Job Summary
Under direction of the Building Trades Manager (or the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor), performs journeyman level carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction, and alteration of the College buildings and facilities. The carpenter works in all campus buildings and facilities.
In addition to traditional carpentry duties, the position is responsible for maintaining and servicing building access hardware and performing basic locksmith functions related to mechanical lock systems and door hardware in order to support campus safety, security, and facility operations.
Essential Responsibilities

  • Performs Journeyman level carpentry work in construction/ alteration / repair of buildings to include framing of partitions, drywall, building cabinets and finish carpentry.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains doors, door frames, thresholds, and associated door hardware including locks, cylinders, closers, panic hardware, and related access hardware to ensure proper building functionality and security.
  • Performs basic locksmith functions including re-keying locks, replacing lock cylinders, maintaining and adjusting door locking mechanisms, and troubleshooting mechanical lock and door hardware systems.
  • Installs/repairs/maintains bathroom hardware, glass, mirrors, plaques, doors, door hardware, frames, thresholds and locks.
  • Maintains building key systems including assisting with key control processes, coordinating lock changes as directed, and ensuring that mechanical lock hardware is functioning properly throughout campus facilities.
  • Builds/ assembles office furniture, shelving and picture frames.
  • Manufacture, from rough lumber, desired profiles such as chair rails, crown mouldings, door casings, baseboards and cabinets.
  • Repairs/ installs ceramic tile walls and floors, ceilings and ceiling tiles, patches broken plaster and hangs wallpaper.
  • Installs floorcoverings, bulletin boards, chalk boards, wall pockets, pictures, etc.
  • Mixes & finishes concrete for sidewalks, ramps and fence post installations.
  • Plans and completes work from initial layout to final assembly by interpreting and applying oral instructions, plans, specifications, blueprints and work orders.
  • Responds to work orders related to door hardware, lock maintenance, and building access issues as part of the Facilities Services maintenance program.
  • Assist other teams/trades/maintenance workers with projects as needed.

Safety and Training
  • Follows building codes and operates tools and equipment safely.
  • Follows departmental, College, and OSHA policies and procedures to ensure safe practices.
  • Participates in required, monthly safety training meetings
  • Participates in equipment operation training, as appropriate.
  • Maintains knowledge of commercial door hardware, mechanical lock systems, and applicable safety and security standards associated with building access hardware.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance
  • Maintains provided service vehicle.
  • Utilizes specialized locksmith tools and equipment necessary for servicing and maintaining mechanical lock systems and door hardware.

Recordkeeping and Administrative Work
  • Retrieves and closes work orders via work order system several times per day.
  • Creates materials list of items, tools, etc, necessary to complete jobs.
  • Documents lock changes, door hardware repairs, and related maintenance activities through the work order system as required.

Risk Management & Stewardship of College Property
  • All employees in Facilities Services are expected to protect and maintain all College property and the people who come to SMC to learn, live, work and visit. Therefore, the following are required:
  • Proactively identify, report or resolve any and all safety issues as quickly as possible.
  • Proactively identify issues related to code compliance and report them to the appropriate supervisor or Director as soon as possible.
  • Ensure the campus is clean and orderly.
  • Return furnishings and other equipment to their places when moved by members of the community or after scheduled events.
  • Take care to ensure College property is not compromised due to propped doors, broken locks, or left out in the rain or weather.
  • Ensure that building entry points, door hardware, and mechanical locking systems are properly maintained to support campus safety and security.
  • Work proactively to reduce opportunities for theft and vandalism.
  • Ensure that our campus facilities achieve the greatest amount of "up time," meaning all services and utilities provided shall have minimal disruption in service.
  • Disruptions in service shall be well-planned with constituent groups and result in the least impact to the campus.

Other Duties as Assigned
Experience and Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years journeyman level carpentry, including experience installing, repairing, or maintaining commercial door hardware and mechanical lock systems.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Abilitiy to read blueprints/drawings
  • Plan and layout work projects
  • Operate tools/equipment, such as utility truck, power saws, planers, drill presses, sanders, table saws, radial arm saws and an assortment of hand tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Follow detailed oral/written instructions and exercise important human relations skills.
  • Knowledge of commercial door hardware systems and mechanical locking mechanisms.
  • Ability to perform locksmith-related functions, including lock re-keying, lock cylinder replacement, and adjustment of door hardware and access systems.
  • Often required to lift/push/pull objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Operate hand tools while exerting moderate to severe physical effort.
  • Often requried to work in cramped/ strained positions.
  • Be able to work outdoors in inclement weather and be exposed to dust, fumes and other hazards.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • The Facilities Services department operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Therefore, swing, weekend, and emergency shifts are required.
  • Facilities Services employees are considered critical employees and will be required to assist the College in the event of campus emergencies.

Licenses & Certifications:
Valid California driver's license. Must be insurable by the College's insurance carrier.
