Job Summary
The Anatomy Lab Coordinator works under minimal supervision with substantial autonomy and professional judgment to manage all aspects of the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Human Anatomy laboratory (BIOL 2325) curriculum implementation and resource management. Additionally, this position may assist with the management of other biology labs (such as BIOL 1035, BIOL 1055, BIOL 1075, BIOL 2025, BIOL 2035, BIOL 2065, and/or BIOL 2425) and shared spaces as needed.

As the department's recognized subject matter expert in human anatomy laboratory operations, this position works closely with anatomy faculty course leads and provides essential expertise for curriculum implementation. While formal budget approval ultimately rests with the Associate Dean, this position exercises significant budgetary management with minimal oversight.

The coordinator is responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of lab operations across multiple campuses. This responsibility includes comprehensive management of lab resources including procurement, weekly set-up, inventory, and budget tracking; direct coordination with the SLCC Body Donor Program Coordinator on body donor acquisition and maintenance; coordination with the dissection instructor on BIOL 2325 needs; development and enforcement of safety protocols; co-leadership in hiring, training, mentoring and scheduling of lab instructors; consistent coordination with and receiving direction from faculty course leads on curriculum implementation and standardization; and teaching labs as appropriate.

The coordinator aids in cross-departmental initiatives related to anatomy education and serves as a critical liaison with Health Science programs whose students depend on these courses for their educational pathways. This position demonstrates creativity and innovation in solving complex problems and implements strategic improvements that enhance program quality and student success, while working within the curriculum framework established by faculty.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Essential Duties

Laboratory Management and Safety: Manage weekly setup, maintenance, and takedown of approximately 35 anatomy lab sections across multiple campuses. Develop and enforce comprehensive safety protocols for cadaver laboratories in compliance with OSHA and SLCC Risk Management Policies, lead strategic planning for laboratory improvements, and implement preventative maintenance programs for specialized equipment.
Instruction and Professional Development: Teach at least one Anatomy lab aide course (BIOL 2327) per term and at least one Anatomy lab (BIOL 2325) per year. If not qualified to teach BIOL 2327, teach BIOL 2325 each term in its place. Participate in professional development and share expertise through presentations and training sessions for other instructors.
Personnel Collaboration and Curriculum Quality: Lead recruiting and training processes for lab instructors and aides across campuses, foster collaboration among adjunct faculty, and analyze student performance data to create feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement.
Curriculum Implementation: Provide essential expertise to faculty course leads, serving as the primary resource for laboratory capabilities. Recommend substantive improvements to lab objectives and procedures for faculty approval and provide weekly lab instructor guides to ensure standardized protocol implementation.
Financial and Resource Management: Exercise de facto budget management with minimal oversight, independently managing expenditures within the Biology student lab fee account and managing procurement with significant decision-making authority, with formal BCM authority residing with the Associate Dean. Analyze expenditures, prepare budget reports, forecast resource needs, and implement strategic inventory management systems.
Regulatory Compliance and Waste Management: Coordinate with the Body Donor Program Coordinator on specialized protocols for cadaver care and anatomical waste disposal. Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements, monitor instructor compliance, and maintain comprehensive documentation systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Lab Expertise:
Ability to set-up and break down weekly labs across multiple campuses ensuring smooth running of approximately 35 laboratory sections per week taught by several instructors
Demonstrated expertise in laboratory protocol development, standardization, and implementation
Comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy and cadaver care
Specialized expertise in maintaining anatomical models and laboratory equipment
Experience coordinating accommodations for students with disabilities while maintaining laboratory safety and educational standards
Knowledge of chemical interactions, solution preparation, and chemical safety
Expert understanding of proper handling and disposal of biological, chemical, and hazardous materials
Advanced knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, OSHA regulations and SLCC Risk Management Policies
Demonstrated ability to solve complex laboratory problems and implement innovative solutions
Ability to analyze operational data and implement improvements to lab protocols and procedures
Budget and Inventory Management:
Exceptional organizational skills for strategic inventory management and resource allocation
Experience developing and managing laboratory budgets, tracking expenditures, and analyzing cost-effectiveness
Personnel Management:
Demonstrated ability to independently manage laboratory schedules and operations across multiple campus locations
Ability to mentor laboratory personnel, including instructors, aides, and student workers through collaborative activities such as beginning of semester coordination meetings and weekly lab guides
Experience developing structured learning outcomes and effective teaching strategies for new laboratory aides and student workers
Professional Skills:
Advanced communication and leadership skills for coordinating with diverse stakeholders, leading teams, and influencing departmental policies
Strategic thinking and autonomous decision-making capability, including planning for departmental growth and supporting broader SLCC goals
Demonstrated skill in collaborating with other lab coordinators and lab manager on department-wide projects and resource optimization

Teaching:
Use of data-driven, highly interactive teaching strategies and methodologies specific to anatomy education
Minimum qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Anatomy, or closely related field
Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in coordinating laboratory operations or instructing an anatomy lab.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Biology, Anatomy, or closely related field
Experience managing a cadaver lab
Understanding of Body Donor Program regulations and body donor use and care
Experience with curriculum development and laboratory standardization
Experience mentoring laboratory instructors
Record of successful implementation of innovative laboratory teaching methodologies
