We are seeking outstanding computer science professionals who have a passion for applying their software development, AI engineering, and cybersecurity skills to tackle some of the most challenging national security problems in a variety of high-impact areas. On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Develop and deploy software to support critical national security missions
- Analyze software and AI systems to identify vulnerabilities and limitations
- Interact with team members to identify needs and requirements
- Present your findings and solutions to your team or organization
- Participate in various team planning, standup or team meetings, demos, and retrospectives, depending on the project's software development lifecycle process
- Produce and disseminate research proposals, reports, or papers

*The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance (within 50 miles) for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary and it requires 60%+ onsite attendance.
Salary Range:
$102,400 - $199,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D Computer Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation). ¿
- Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile). ¿
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Strong software development proficiency in a wide range of modern programming languages including C++, Java, and Python.
- Experience with AI engineering and integrating large language models.
- Experience with analyzing software and AI system to identify vulnerabilities and limitations.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance and SCI clearance.
- Ability to conduct independent technical R&D.
- Ability to develop technical ideas and proposals.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment.
- An existing DOE Q clearance or SCI clearance.

The Advanced Solutions Engineering (ASE) group is a highly integrated team of departments focused on delivering software and system solutions that impact Sandia's critical programs. Our focus is on reliable, software-intensive solutions, enabling customer agility and performance, and providing broad impact across Sandia and our mission customers. We are an agile organization whose work is focused within several of Sandia's mission portfolio areas including Global Security, National Security Programs, and Advanced Science & Technology. Core proficiencies of the organization include Systems Software and Architecture, Computer Security Research and Analysis, and Algorithms and Applications.
Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
