Job Description

Summary

The Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children's Cancer and Hematology Clinic located in McAllen, TX is recruiting a full-time pediatric hematologist/oncologist. The clinic was created in 2001 through a joint effort of the Vannie Cook Foundation, Baylor College of Medicine, and Texas Children's Hospital to provide local pediatric hematology/oncology care to the under-served children of the Rio Grande Valley. The clinic is an extension of the Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center and is the region's first and only pediatric cancer and hematology treatment facility.

Job Duties

  • Outpatient and inpatient care for Pediatric Hematology and Oncology patients at the Vannie Cook Clinic and several surrounding community hospitals. This position is in McAllen, TX and is considered 100% clinical.
  • Outpatient duties include a full patient schedule, oversight of infusion room services, and managing calls from clinic staff, physicians, and families throughout the day.
  • Inpatient care/on-call duties as a member of a 3-team rotation. The inpatient/on-call rotation is 7 days and includes evening/weekend/holiday work. Inpatient care consists of daily rounds and work of the day, phone calls from hospital staff in the evening and coming in at night for acute needs as deemed necessary. The physician will consult community hospitals and manage phone calls from parents via page operator on evening/weekends/holidays.
  • Performing procedures (bone marrow, lumbar puncture) on patients as indicated in both the outpatient and inpatient setting.
  • Completing orders, documentation and billing in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining and completing all necessary regulatory requirements to remain compliant with COG and institutional research studies.
  • Subspecialty backup and consultation exist via physicians at Texas Children's Hospital Main Campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or equivalent degree
  • Board certified or board eligible for Pediatric Hematology-Oncology boards
  • Prior to employment start date must obtain Texas Medical License and Drug Enforcement Administration registration
  • Spanish language fluency preferred
