Position AnnouncementLocated within Utah Tech University's Innovation Labs at Atwood Innovation Plaza, the Parkspass program operates the digital recreation infrastructure for Utah's 46 state parks under contract with the Utah Division of State Parks. Parkspass is seeking a Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and maintenance of the platform's web and mobile applications, payment and reservation systems, and integrations. This position reports to the Director of Parkspass and Innovation Labs and serves as a senior technical member of the software team, setting engineering standards and mentoring junior developers and student interns.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of secure, scalable web and mobile applications supporting recreation passes, reservations, payments, and visitor services.
Architect and build application programming interfaces (APIs) and integrations connecting Parkspass systems with payment processors, state systems, and partner agencies.
Develop and maintain both front-end and back-end components across the platform.
Develop and maintain the inventory mobile and web application for the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS).
Integrate secure applications with merchant and payment services, including transaction processing and reconciliation feeds.
Design, implement, and maintain authentication and single sign-on (SSO) capabilities.
Establish and enforce engineering standards, including code review, testing, security, and documentation practices.
Mentor junior developers and student interns and provide technical guidance across projects.
Monitor, optimize, and support production systems for performance, reliability, and security.
Perform routine site audits, ongoing maintenance, and technology innovation across multiple web properties on an as-needed basis.
Maintain communication with team members and supervisors regarding technical direction and project status.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in software development, computer science, software engineering, web development, or a related field required. A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Two years of related internship or job experience required; four or more years of software development experience, or experience working with state or national government agencies, strongly preferred. The total qualifications required are based on a combination of education and work experience. Any experience used to meet the education requirement cannot also be used to meet the work experience requirement.
Expertise in front-end technologies, including JavaScript, CSS3, and HTML5, and modern frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.
Proficiency with server-side languages such as Python, Node.js, Go, or PHP.
Experience designing and consuming APIs and integrating third-party services.
Familiarity with database technologies, including MongoDB, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
Experience connecting applications to merchant and payment services such as Stripe or Authorize.net.
Experience with cloud platforms and services (for example, AWS or Cloudflare), open-source web servers such as Apache or Nginx, and Linux/Unix environments.
Knowledge of UI/UX principles and basic prototype design.
Understanding of application security, authentication, and single sign-on.
Understanding of search engine optimization (SEO) practices for public-facing applications preferred.
Understanding of network diagnostics and analytical tools preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead projects, mentor other developers, and work both independently and as part of a team.
Supplemental Information
POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time overtime-exempt staff position. Annual salary of $72,000-$76,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Desired start date of September 2026.
