This unit is part of the Shared Services and Research Computing and Data organization, which is part of NC State’s Office of Information Technology department, and has service offerings for Hosted Services, Platform Compute Services, and Central Services and Integration.

Hosted Services provides support and services to NCSU departments and colleges for managing their servers, and related services, while hosting them in a stable and secure IT environment. These environments include on site and remote data centers, as well as various cloud providers such as Amazon and Microsoft. We work with many NCSU OIT infrastructure groups to determine hosting options based upon availability requirements (uptime, etc.), integration/middleware requirements, security requirements, disaster recovery, etc.

Platform Compute Services provides the infrastructure and support for virtual computing, centralized storage, enterprise virtualization and backup services to campus units supporting NC State students, faculty, staff and partners. Services include the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) environment that deliver private cloud computing services, and application delivery for faculty and students. We provide enterprise virtual hosting services, general storage services, block storage services, DR/backup solutions, and also provide consulting and departmental storage array management.

Central Services and Integration (CSI) provides and supports enterprise-level integration of Linux/Unix services, as well as process ownership of NC State’s Configuration Management Database. Services include providing both shared and secure Linux build support environments, as well as Red Hat Satellite (RHN) patching and reporting for RHEL based systems. We provide monitoring, notification, and on call services, customized integrated paging solutions, and on call scheduling solutions. We provide NTP time services, mirror server services, MySQL/MariaDB/PostgreSQL hosted databases, proxy services, load balancing, ERP/EAS email relays, and ERP LDAP IPA services.

Essential Job Duties
This Systems Administrator position is a team lead for the Central Services and Integration (CSI) team providing a critical layer of diverse systems and integration services such as Linux and systems build, automation, and configuration management. Other services include systems monitoring, file system management, data and file transfer, and database service (MariaDB / MySQL / PostgreSQL ) support.

Position provides architecture design, standard Linux image provisioning, patch management, technical training, as well as Linux system installation, administration, maintenance, tuning, and troubleshooting
Position is required to support security standards for PCI-DSS, NIST 800-171, Endpoint Security, and ISO 27002
Position also acts a third tier support to other IT professionals on campus, and is a member of a 24×7 on call rotation
Position will utilize strong project management skills to help customers increase reliability of systems / services at NCSU.
Other Responsibilities
Position will include but not be limited to: Design, deployment, and maintenance of Central Monitoring, notification ( SMS ), and on call service
Central Linux provisioning, application integration deployment with Configuration Management support for customer user base in central Linux deployment
Support of the central MariaDB environment
General programming work in multiple projects / services supported by the CSI group
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming, or closely related area; OR
Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming or closely related area; OR
An Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, or Networking Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming, or closely related area; OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience
Other Required Qualifications
Extensive experience in Linux based operating systems
Experience in managing / maintaining and designing Linux image deployment at scale
Ability to deal with authentication / authorization, application integration and Linux provisioning systems using Git, Foreman, Configuration Management( E.g. Puppet, Ansible, Chef ), Monitoring systems experience( i.e. Nagios, Grafana, Zabbix ), or similar systems
Experience in some level of programming or scripting
Experience in programming for systems automation and configuration
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in at least one Containerization( i.e. Kubernetes, Docker ) technology
Experience programming in Python, JSON
Experience working in Ansible
